When Mark Fountain arrived at Three Rivers Indian Lodge in 2016, he wasn’t just seeking a program, he was looking for connection, identity, and purpose. Like many of the men who come through our doors, Mark grew up surrounded by love but often felt like he didn't belong, whether at school or even among his own Native relatives.
That feeling of not fitting in led him down a path of drugs and alcohol. But like many stories of survival, it also led him toward something greater.
“I became someone I was not and ended up lost. Coming to Three Rivers helped me remember who I truly am.”— Mark Fountain
Rediscovering Identity Through Cultural Healing
At Three Rivers, Mark engaged in a holistic healing process that supported his mind, body, and spirit.
Through:
Sweat lodge and ceremony
Individual counseling and group therapy
Peer support and community living
Physical work (including the wood pile)
Mentorship and traditional teachings
…Mark began to reconnect with his higher power and with himself.
“Three Rivers helped me get my mind, body, and spirit balanced. I reconnected to my spirit through sweat lodge and counseling. And I felt that connection again, the one I thought I lost.”
Rebuilding Confidence Through Purpose
After graduating from the six-month treatment program, Mark made a life-changing decision, he enrolled in culinary school.
It was his first time completing a formal certification.
✔ He graduated
✔ Found his purpose
✔ Returned to Three Rivers Indian Lodge, this time, not as a client, but as the Cook, serving the next generation of men seeking healing.
“For the first time in my life, I was certified in something. Now I get to cook for the place that helped save my life. I know who I am, and I like who I am thanks to Three Rivers.”
“When a client becomes a mentor, the healing continues.”
Mark is now part of our staff, working side by side with team members and helping men move through the same journey he once walked.
Generational healing happens when our clients:
return as mentors and leaders,
share their stories,
show others what is possible.
Peer-led recovery isn’t just programming, it’s living proof.
Why Client Success Stories Matter
Mark’s transformation shows that with:
culturally grounded support,
spiritual healing,
clinical counseling,
and community-based accountability…
…long-term recovery is possible.
Every story like Mark’s is a reminder that:
Healing is not just personal, it’s cultural
Recovery is not linear, it’s relational
Sobriety is not just about stopping, it’s about becoming.
